Urbane and political looking inspector Thomas Lynley is a detective personality from the character The Inspector Lynley Mysteries, which is telecast as continuous running television series in British Broadcast Corporation (BBC). The story is based on the fictional character Detective Inspector Thomas “Tommy” Lynley, 8th Earl of Asherton, played by Nathaniel Parker. The story is also about Detective Sergeant Barbara Havers, who belongs to normal working class family. Both, Inspector Thomas “Tommy” Lynley and Sergeant Barbara Havers work with Scotland Yard.

The able detective Inspector Thomas “Tommy” Lynley drives in his flash Bristol 410 car. He has strong faith in the old values and traditions of the society. Though he has modern opinions about certain things, there are many times when he recluses back to old traditional value system. It would not be wrong to say that detective Inspector Thomas “Tommy” Lynley has high moral sense; is completely devoted to his work and professions; and above all has professional demeanour and decorum. The detective is adored by people in the Scotland Yard for his work and extreme sense of professionalism.

The best words that can describe actions of detective Inspector Thomas “Tommy” Lynley are ”He is not always right, but he’s expertly judgmental about what is wrong, when it is wrong and where it is wrong?” Tommy is one of those very few detectives who are liked by people, besides, looking snobbish in his character.

Tommy has the patience to listen to people, understand about their psychology and acts according to his own senses. You cannot rate Tommy as one of those easy going detectives who just solves the case with all that fun and lethargic attitude. There’s absolutely no way where you find Tommy in a lethargic mood. The best thing about this smart and posh detective is that he can gel with anybody and everybody. The quality makes him stand different from the crowd, and you would get to know same things about every action that he makes.

Detective Sergeant Barbara Havers is partner of detective Inspector Thomas “Tommy” Lynley, and both have kind of schism in between them. Professionally both of them are adept, and they know what to do when any untoward circumstance arises. Otherwise they are a good match, considering the fact that both of them come from different social strata of life.

In the later series both detective Inspector Thomas “Tommy” Lynley and his one time friend Helen (Lesley Vickerage), both tie nuptial pad in 2003 story. As the story line moves in further series, it is seen that Lynley gets entangled in serious problems and these problems become traumatic for him. He gets separated from Helen. Soon as his mind gets troubled by the emotional problems, he is arrested and later suspended for passing threatening comments on a suspect.

Though character Detective Inspector Thomas “Tommy” Lynley love life is troubled by emotional failures, he proves to be an efficient detective who lacks all the professionalism and attitude to deal with complex cases.
