Detective Conan also popularly known as Meitantei Conan is the lead character in Japanese detective television series which was scripted and illustrated by Gosho Aoyama, which is screened as television series in the name Weekly Shonen Sunday and was aired since 1994.
The series has been named ‘Closed Case’ for being released in English language which is as result of the legal considerations of its name Detective Conan. The story focuses on the escapades of Jimmy Kudo, who is prodigious juvenile detective who was accidentally transformed into a child due to effects of poison.
Detective Conan was continually aired on television as detective series since 1994. This series has spawned a major portion of the media franchise.
This Japanese anthology has been adapted into animated series which is produced by TMS Entertainment which is being aired in Japan till this day. The series has been transformed into eleven highly graphic animation series, thirteen animated full featured films, and also in the form of video games.
The animation was licensed for broadcast in North America by Funimation Entertainment. The series was also licensed for English language magazine in North America with the release of more than thirty four publications till date.
Fifty episodes of the series were dubbed in English and shown on Cartoon Networks. The animation adaption was highly popular and ranked very well in Animage’s polls from the year between 1996 and 2000.
The character
The story focuses on Jimmy Kudo, a teenaged high school going genius and detective who voluntarily worked with the detective department. He was attacked by two culprits of a mysterious crime while investigating a crime of blackmail. He was compelled to consume a newly created experimental poison which was supposed to kill him.
Luckily, due to some rare side effects and fortune of Jimmy, the drug transformed his body back into his youthful self when the culprits left him alone to die. He planned to conceal his identity and investigate the whereabouts of those criminals, which he later comes to know that they are members of Black Organization, he then adopts fictitious name of Conan Edogawa.
In order to search for the syndicates, he manages to persuade his childhood friend Rachel Moore, to bring into confidence with his father Richard Moore who works as Private Detective. He also joins Teiten elementary school and soon forms the Detective Junior League with his three classmates, named George, Amy and Mitch.
Jimmy continues to solve many criminal cases pretending as Richard Moore, with aid of his special gadgets, disclosed by a scientist who is also family friend. Richard Moore, who is rather an incompetent detective, is confused about the sudden fame in solving many criminal cases.
However, he was more excited about his consequent rise of fame and recognition.
In the later episodes, a new character named Anita Hailey joins in, who was a former member of Black Organization, and had code name ’Sherry’, though her real name was Shiho Miyano, an intelligent scientist who created a poison called APTX 4869, which resulted in transforming Jimmy into a child. She is aware of Jimmy’s identity and helps him in his mission.
